As a recognised centre of excellence in both training and research, the Department of Life Sciences receives one of the highest levels of funding in the country, employs 300 staff and hosts over 400 postgraduates students.

The Division of Ecology and Evolution is one of the largest such groupings in the country, located at Silwood Park, our campus in Berkshire near Ascot and Windsor. In 100 ha of pristine woodlands, the campus hosts high-tech research and teaching laboratories, student accommodation, recreational, and sport facilities.

We have formal links and joint appointments with both the Natural History Museum (London) and the Royal Botanical Gardens (Kew), and run some of our courses jointly with them, and with the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the Institute of Zoology in London. 


MSc in Quantitative Biology

This course teaches quantitative methods and biological concepts together, through application of the methods to cutting-edge biological research problems. The focus is on current topics in modern quantitative biology such as interactions between ecological and evolutionary dynamics, and the effects of climate change on ecological communities.

The Department of Life Sciences will offer bursaries to selected successful UK/EU applicants to partially offset the cost of tuition fees for Masters courses. Prizes will also be awarded to some of the best students.
