The MSc in Petroleum Geochemistry is designed to equip science graduates with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary for successful careers in the petroleum and environmental industries and their service sectors, as well as providing the training necessary to convert graduates into petroleum geochemists capable of academic research. The programme also facilitates “migration” into the wider field of organic geochemistry, an important subject not given detailed coverage at undergraduate level.
The course enjoys excellent employment rates, with alumni working in the Petroleum industry around the world. The course is underpinned by “World Leading and Internationally Excellent” research (RAE2008) carried out by Newcastle University’s School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences. Petroleum Geochemistry research at the University enjoys particularly strong links with industry including Chevron, BP, Petrobras, Total and more.
Petroleum geochemistry is essentially an applied geological field of study. Although the course focuses on the use of chemical methods to quantify and characterise the organic matter and hydrocarbons present in sediment and rock samples, the applications are nearly all geological.
