Throughout the PhD degree you will conduct your research and write research papers. These you will publish in conferences and journals, and if you are successful, you will travel to conferences to present your work and discuss it with experts from around the world.
You will also experience how to do joint research with other PhD students, staff member or visitors, and you will be part of one or more regularly meeting research groups. You will have an opportunity to visit other universities and research labs to discuss and collaborate.

The PhD degree is completed by writing a thesis describing your work and successfully defending this thesis in an oral examination. At the oral exam, you will discuss your research with two examiners, including a leading researcher from outside Newcastle.
Typically, a research student is expected to take three to four years of postgraduate study to complete a PhD.
