Duration of the Award
We are seeking two outstanding candidates to join a cross-disciplinary team of university and industry scientists/engineers to investigate the intriguing prospect of using insulators to improve the electrical conductivity of metal/semiconductor contacts.
The project covers sputtering and atomic layer deposition (ALD) for thin film deposition with extensive material and electrical characterisation to understand the thin films and their interfaces. You will work in one or more of these areas depending on your interests. Project partners include Cambridge University, Helsinki University, Analog Devices Inc, Petec/CPI and National Physical Laboratory.
The Emerging Materials and Technology group have clean rooms handling wafers up to 200 mm. The university hosts the EPSRC National Facility for XPS. Climate controlled characterisation facilities house many unique tools including AFM, Raman and probe stations for I-V and C-V measurements, high frequency measurements to 67 GHz and noise.
Value of the Award of Eligibility
Each award has a different sponsor:
(1) EPSRC funded award. Depending on how you meet the EPSRC's eligibility criteria you may be entitled to a full (covers UK/EU tuition fees and an annual stipend) or partial award (covers UK/EU tuition fees only).
(2) The Analog Devices studentship is available to any applicant subject to approval by both Analog and Newcastle University. Depending on your qualification, experience and circumstances, part studentships may be offered.
You must have, or expect to achieve, a first-class or upper-second-class honours degree in one of the physical sciences or engineering. Preference will be given to applicants with physics, electrical engineering or materials degrees.
