The Institute for Animal Health (IAH) is one of five research institutes of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and is at the forefront of research into animal diseases.
The Institute is currently situated on two campuses, Pirbright Laboratory in Surrey and Compton Laboratory in Berkshire. The process of transferring Compton Laboratory activities to Pirbright is underway.
The Fellowship in Avian Viral Immunology is aimed at strengthening fundamental research capability in the field of avian immunology and immune responses to viruses, strengthen research . The Fellow is expected to contribute towards developing IAH as a major International Centre for immunology of poultry viral diseases by establishing external collaborations and by securing additional research funding. IAH currently has different groups working on important viral diseases such as Marek’s disease, infectious bronchitis, infectious bursal disease, avian leukosis and avian influenza.
The post holder research responsibilities include:
· developing and leading a world-class research portfolio on the fundamental immunology of avian hosts in response to challenge with viral pathogens
· delivering against targets agreed with BBSRC and Defra as part of IAH Science Strategy and in accordance with IAE requirements
· interacting with other members of the AVD programme as well as with the scientists in other programmes to establish collaborative internal and external research links
· winning additional external grant funding to support their research within the programme
· managing a research group including all issues pertaining to health and safety, biosecurity and biosafety, home office license requirements, quality assurance, staff training, staff career development and supervision of PhD students
· Playing a full role in the research life of the Institute and representing the IAH externally as required. Within the IAH, at the request of senior management, full participation and membership of various internal committees will be necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
A PhD or equivalent in a relevant branch of biosciences is essential. Evidence of winning grants, significant research experience and an excellent record of research productivity including high-quality research publications is highly desirable. Evidence of giving invited lectures and receiving honorary positions or awards would be an advantage.
Candidates with evidence of experience and vision in management of research, ability to think and operate strategically, leadership qualities in a multi-disciplinary environment, excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively with funding bodies/peer-review groups.

The Institute is engaged in Research work on a number of virus diseases of live stock, several of which, in particular foot-and-mouth disease, are highly infectious to livestock, therefore compliance with the Disease Security Regulations is an essential requirement of employment.
The Employee must not live on any premises where any cloven hoofed animals are kept, such as cattle, sheep, pigs, goats or deer, and must not visit any premises where such animals are kept within three days of entering the restricted area of the laboratory, or within five days of entering the restricted animal accommodation.

BENEFITS OF THE POST
The post is graded at Band E with starting salary of £33,780 to £37,534 depending on qualifications and experience. This post is initially for 5 years (reviewed at 2 and 4 years), suitable for an ambitious post-doctoral scientist with an established track record and experience of research. On appointment, you are eligible to join the Research Council’s Pension Scheme.
You have the choice of either:
· an attractive, career average, defined benefit pension scheme. The bulk of the cost of this scheme is met by the employer: or
· a partnership pension with a contribution from the employer. Our basic contribution is based on your age, and we pay this regardless of whether you choose to contribute anything. You do not have to contribute if you do not wish to but, if you do, we will also match your contributions up to an additional 3% of pay.
Annual leave is 27 days on appointment plus 10.5 days public and privilege holidays. The Institute has a subsidised child care scheme, staff restaurant and free parking. Full Time staff work a 37 hour week, Monday to Thursday 8:45 – 17:15 and Friday 8:30 – 16:30.
