Ceramics for ballistic applications, EngD
Different ceramic materials respond in a variety of ways to the same ballistic threat and likewise the same ceramic material is capable of showing very different behaviours when the threat is changed. Further, the very nature of the threat-ceramic interaction (very short time frame, very high strain rates) makes this an extremely difficult process to model. Thus, currently, much of the material development is via a trial-and-error process and there is much to be done to move to a more scientific approach. The overarching aim of this project is to create a range of materials in the laboratory, testing the most promising ones and then transferring the technology to commercial production.
