Glass to metal seals, PhD
The joining of glasses and ceramics to metals is vital in many areas of industry. For example, electronic feed-throughs, where the glass or ceramic provides electrical isolation for a series of pins or connectors. In order to increase the scope of glass-to-metal or ceramic-to-metal seals, there is a need to understand the nature of the interface between the glass/ceramic and metal, how the interface is formed, and if there are any effects of ageing. This will require extensive microscopy and spectroscopy of the interfaces.
