Plasma Pre-treatment in adhesive bonding, EngD.
Successful and effective structural adhesive bonding relies upon the creation of surfaces which are easily wetted and provide a chemistry and topography that promotes and maximises adhesion. To date, no universal process has been identified, with different materials requiring different treatments, many of which give variable performance in terms of durability. One area that shows particular universal potential is that associated with the use of gas plasma. Recently, considerable interest has been shown in the potential for plasma for adhesive bonding applications. Key materials of interest include metals (titanium, aluminum and stainless steel), thermoplastics and thermoset systems and glass epoxy composites. However there are many variables to consider. It is the understanding of these variables with a view to developing optimised pre-treatment "recipes" that will be the focus of this work.
