Duration of the award
To start 1 October 2012 (negotiable) and run for 36 months after the start-date.
Inorganic synthesis of high purity glasses for new fibreoptics will be carried out. The work involves devising new approaches to chemical precursor purification and glass purification. The selenide glasses are infrared-transmitting and have potential as mid-infrared fibre lasers. The work will be carried out in the world-class facilities for infrared glass synthesis and fabrication in the Mid-Infrared Photonic Glasses Group at the University of Nottingham, UK. For glass synthesis there are dedicated rocking furnaces and a MBraun glovebox (< 1ppm oxygen and water). Optical fibre-drawing is carried out on a customised Heathway drawing tower, housed in a class 10,000 clean-room You will work in a world-leading group which is developing mid-infrared fibreoptics for medical applications such as mid-infrared endoscopy and also for bio- and chemical photonic sensing. The award, includes UK & EU fees, stipend, and will fund travel for the successful candidate to other leading UK universities to learn new experimental techniques and also support for attendance at international conferences.
Value of the Award and Eligibility
The award includes tuition fees at the UK and EU rate and an annual stipend of £14,500 (2011/12), tax-free.
Open to all suitable UK or EU applicants.
Candidates should have or expect to achieve a First Class or High 2:1 undergraduate Honours Degree, or MSc with Distinction, or equivalent, in Chemistry, Materials Science or Chemical Engineering. Applicants whose first language is not English must have an IELTS average of 7 or equivalent English language qualification.
