This exciting project concerns physical acoustics and has two main aims. Firstly, to gain an in-depth theoretical understanding of the interaction of low-frequency, high intensity sound with powdered material. Practical applications of this knowledge are (a) removal of powder from surfaces (e.g. electrostatic precipitator filters in power stations) and rapid-prototyped porous metals (e.g. medical implants) and (b) promotion of flow of powders in industrial plant (e.g. cement silos). Secondly, to gain an understanding of high-intensity sound fields to underpin the development of new, efficient and cost-effective designs of driver for different applications.
