The energy consumption of current 3rd generation (3G) mobile communication networks is in the range of 10 Mkilowatt hours per annum, to provide peak data rates of at least 200 kbitsGs. The increasing demands for developing green next generation wireless systems have drawn much attention of key Information and Communications Technology (ICT) players. An innovative wireless demo system developed by Prof. Yi Huangs' team has shown an energy efficiency improvement of 15% over existing systems on the market. This project builds on using this innovative system and will develop a battery free passive indoor navigation system which can be integrated into smart phones thereby further reducing the energy consumption. Unlike other indoor wireless systems (such as WiFi), this eco-friendly system will be highly energy-efficient, cost-effective and minimise radiation release into the environment.
