LED based lights are becoming desirable as replacements for incandescent lamps in airfield lighting applications, driven by the need for power economy, reliability and legislation. However, Enhanced Flight Vision Systems (EVFS) employ an indium antimonide photodetector, which is sensitive in the range 1.5 to 5 microns and use the mid IR emission from the incandescent lighting. However, EFVS cannot 'see' visible LED replacements which therefore need to be further developed to achieve the same spectral output characteristics. The PhD student will be based at Lancaster and would be involved in the fabrication and characterisation of state-of-the-art semiconductor materials and novel LED devices. HeGshe will get strong scientific support from the research group in the Physics Department which has internationally leading expertise in mid-infrared materials growthGprocessing and characterisation. Complementary support will be provided by experienced engineers at Oxley for testing prototype solid state light sources, taking into consideration all aspects of the target application.

The centre brings together the expertise, resources and global contacts of Lancaster University and the University of Liverpool, together with international commercialisation consultancy Inventya Ltd. The aim of the centre is to form collaborative R&D partnerships to enable and drive innovation in businesses, supporting the development of new products, processes and services for the global marketplace that have positive environmental benefits.
