The Department of Life Sciences embraces the full breadth of modern life sciences activity and comprises one of the largest life sciences groups in Europe. The Department has an outstanding international reputation for research, being home to several major research centres and with the majority of research being graded as world leading or internationally excellent in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise. We also have excellent facilities for postgraduate research and for advanced taught courses in a wide range of subjects considered to be essential aspects of the life sciences. As a recognised centre of excellence in both training and research, we receive one of the highest levels of funding in the country. This enables us to support a large number of research groups with a diversity of research interests. The Department is comprised of three academic Divisions: Cell and Molecular Biology; Ecology and Evolution; and Molecular Biosciences.
Many of our postgraduate courses and most of our staff are based at the South Kensington Campus (SK), but several of our postgraduate courses are held at Silwood Park (SP), our campus in Berkshire near Ascot. The latter have formal links and joint appointments with both the Natural History Museum (London) and the Royal Botanical Gardens (Kew), and some of these courses run jointly with them, and with the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the Institute of Zoology in London.
