3-year BBSRC CASE PhD studentship position

A 3-year BBSRC CASE PhD studentship position in collaboration with GSK is available in the groups of Dr Bernadette Byrne, Division of Molecular Biosciences, Imperial College London and Dr Julia Hubbard at GSK, Stevenage. The project focuses on the expression, characterization, isolation and structure determination of lipid G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs).

GPCRs are key mediators of the cellular responses to a wide range of bioactive molecules, including hormones, neurotransmitters and drugs. The importance of GPCRs as drug targets has made them the subject of intense study. Despite the high resolution structure determination of a handful of receptor proteins there remain significant gaps in our understanding of their mechanism of action. In addition some groups of GPCRs, including lipid GPCRs, are yet to yield a high resolution structure.

The position will form part of a small group within Dr Byrne’s laboratory working on these important molecules in collaboration with GSK. Dr Byrne has a well equipped laboratory dedicated to the production of membrane proteins for structural studies. The successful candidate will be mainly based at Imperial College but will also spend time at GSK under Dr Hubbard’s supervision.

The successful candidate should have an undergraduate degree awarded at an upper second or higher (or equivalent) in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or similar and either have or expect to be awarded a Masters degree. The studentship stipend is funded at normal BBSRC levels with an additional industrial top-up.

In order to be considered for this studentship you must fulfill the BBSRC studentship eligibility criteria (www.bbsrc.ac.uk).

The position is available to start 1st October 2010.

Closing date for applications 31st March 2010.

All informal enquiries and applications (full CV and covering letter) should be addressed to Dr Bernadette Byrne (contact information cab be obtained via the 'View contact details link). Alternatively click 'APPLY NOW' to apply via email.
