4-year PhD Programme: Molecular functions in disease - Glasgow

Frontline Science in Scotland

University of Glasgow Wellcome Trust 4-year PhD Programme: Molecular functions in disease

This programme is seeking six outstanding research students for entry in late September 2010. The funding package includes a generous stipend (currently over £17,000 per annum), tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and research expenses.

This interdisciplinary programme is addressing fundamental problems in biomedical science using contemporary methods. Research projects are available in a wide variety of disciplines including structural biology, medicinal and chemical biology, cell biology, biochemistry and molecular genetics. These approaches are being applied to answering questions relevant to understanding the pathogenic processes in a diverse array of diseases including those associated with microbial, parasitic and viral infections, inherited disorders, autoimmune responses, and other acquired disorders including diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer. The first year includes both intensive instruction in a variety of research methods and skills, integrated with three 14 week laboratory placements. Each placement provides hands-on experience in a variety of experimental procedures. Participation in the full range of available disciplines is strongly encouraged. This first year allows students to make an informed choice of their individual 3-year PhD project from approximately 50 potential supervisors. Development of joint PhD projects involving more than one discipline is actively encouraged.

The aim of the Programme is to provide a firm basis for career development by producing scientists with a broad range of knowledge and skills and the ability to focus on important and relevant problems in the molecular aspects of disease.

We invite applications from UK, EU and international candidates with any scientific background (biology, chemistry, physics, medicine, veterinary science, etc) who hold, or expect to obtain, at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree (or equivalent). Applications from talented students in developing and restructuring countries are particularly encouraged.
