Fully Funded Studentship: Economic assessment of land-based renewables

This fully funded studentship is available to start in 2010, under the supervision of Prof Andrew Lovett in the internationally renowned School of Environmental Sciences, UEA Norwich (95% of research activity classified as internationally leading, excellent or recognised, RAE 2008).

Project description:

FUNDING IS AVAILABLE FOR UK/EU STUDENTS. FUNDING AWARDED FOR THIS PROJECT WILL COVER TUITION FEES AND STIPEND FOR UK STUDENTS. EU STUDENTS MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR FULL FUNDING, OR TUITION FEES ONLY, DEPENDING ON THE FUNDING SOURCE. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS FUNDING; THEY ARE STILL WELCOME TO APPLY FOR THIS PROJECT BUT WOULD HAVE TO FIND ALTERNATIVE FUNDING.

The project aims to analyse the economic case for the development of land-based renewable energy resources as a climate regulating ecosystem service. The research will apply spatial cost-benefit methods to assess the industry costs and non-market benefits of developing land-based renewables such as perennial energy crops, anaerobic digestion and wind generation as a climate regulating ecosystem service. The analysis will consider the potential for carbon sequestration and be extended to evaluate linkages between energy and water technologies where, for example, improved catchment water quality resulting from growing low nutrient input bioenergy crops can reduce energy demands and CO2 emissions associated with water treatment. The study will analyse a region in eastern England and employ GIS techniques to develop and examine different scenarios for the land-based renewable contribution to an energy supply system. This PhD project will make an important contribution to the Energy Supply and Energy Systems Themes in UKERC by contributing to the economic assessment of renewable energy resources.
