Project description:

FUNDING IS AVAILABLE FOR UK/EU STUDENTS. FUNDING AWARDED FOR THIS PROJECT WILL COVER TUITION FEES AND STIPEND FOR UK STUDENTS. EU STUDENTS MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR FULL FUNDING, OR TUITION FEES ONLY, DEPENDING ON THE FUNDING SOURCE. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS FUNDING; THEY ARE STILL WELCOME TO APPLY FOR THIS PROJECT BUT WOULD HAVE TO FIND ALTERNATIVE FUNDING.

The project aims to assess the potential for integrating land-based renewables into a regional energy supply system within the context of spatial planning and social acceptability. The introduction of land-based renewables such as perennial energy crops and anaerobic digestion could make an important contribution to reducing CO2 emissions and also deliver environmental benefits as part of a low nutrient input agricultural system. The development of such technologies will be determined by natural resource considerations, market conditions and socio-economic acceptability. The project will apply a participatory approach (e.g. a deliberative mapping methodology) to appraise renewable resources in relation to other forms of heat and power generation. This work will be developed by combining specialists, stakeholders and citizens in a symmetrical option appraisal process, exploring possible scenarios and relationships between national, regional and local priorities. This PhD project will link to the Energy Demand and Supply Themes of UKERC and will make an important contribution to the analysis of demand- and supply-side renewable energy technologies and their implications for environmental and social policies.
