The next studentships will be starting in September 2010.

BHF 4-Year PhD Programme (2 Studentships for graduates in the biomedical sciences)

Under this studentship the first year of training involves three laboratory based projects to develop key research skills and a taught module to develop critical reading and scientific presentation. The first semester focuses on the development and basic physiology of the cardiovascular system and the second semester on the mechanisms of cardiovascular disease. Laboratory projects are drawn from current research in the Centre for Cardiovascular Science. Students can then make an informed choice of the research area and complete their PhD within the four year period.

The programme provides broad based research training in biomedical science with a focus on the molecular basis of cardiovascular disease. Excellent research facilities are available and experimental approaches include molecular genetics, cell biology, pharmacology, physiology and bioinformatics with an emphasis on the integration of these skills to provide a better understanding of the main cause of death in the UK.

The 4-year studentships are for outstanding students wishing to pursue a career in cardiovascular research. A generous tax-free stipend (currently £18,053), research costs and tuition fees at the home/EEA rate are provided. Students with a BSc Hons (at least upper second class) or MSc in any appropriate discipline are invited to apply for the Programme. Further details, including eligibility criteria are available at www.cardiocore.ed.ac.uk/trainingandment

Informal enquiries should be made to Dr Matthew Bailey, Centre for Cardiovascular Science, Queen's Medical Research Institute, 47 Little France Crescent, Edinburgh EH16 4TJ. As part of the Award (£7.6m), the University has developed a radical new research and training programme to improve the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, which affects millions of people in the UK. The programme runs parallel to the 4-year PhD programme, and has the same course structure.

The 4-year Centre of Research Excellence Award PhD studentship is open to those with a background in the physical sciences who wish to establish a career in cardiovascular research. We wish to encourage students from non-biomedical backgrounds and those from any appropriate discipline (including physics, engineering, mathematics, chemistry, computing and informatics) are invited to apply. Whilst some prior exposure to biological research would be an advantage, it is not essential.

The Centre of Research Excellence Award studentships are for outstanding students wishing to pursue a career in cardiovascular research.
